President'sMessage:
D.K. says U.K. is OK!
Last month I was privileged to attend the 100th International Rotary Convention in Birmingham, England held June 21st through the 24th.Immediately upon arrival, I was thrust into a whirlwind of activity that introduced me to a global community of philanthropic individuals, who together have put forth programs to change the world by promoting peace, habitat conservation, disease eradication, and elevating the living conditions for some of the poorest regions of our planet.

Over 20,000 members, from 153 countries were treated to a barrage of insight, information, and entertainment, featuring memorable and moving speeches from such global icons as Jane Goodall, Mia Farrell, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.The event also marked the changing of the leadership from the current president D.K. Lee from Korea, to the 2009-2010 President John Kenny from Scotland.Talk about going from one side of the globe to the other…“East Meets West” was the theme all week, and was the perfect opportunity to display the diversity between the two cultures.
Attendees of the convention were treated to a host of events starting with The Concert of Concerts held at the Birmingham National Indoor Area. This event featured the lovely and talented vocalist Katherine Jenkins, supported by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The East Meets West Varity Show showcased song and dance from Korea and the UK, and was held at the fabulous Birmingham Symphony Hall downtown. The LG Arena at the National Exhibition Center was host to many events including a Tae Kwon Do (the official sport of S. Korea) exhibition, and a phenomenal tribute to English musicals spotlighting scenes from such classics as Phantom of the Opera, Mama Mia, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, Oliver, and Billy Elliot.Wow, what a blitz! It’s been a few weeks and I’m still processing it all…
